Maida Vale

Location: Maide Vale, London
Client: Private
Status: Complete

The brief was to renovate a raised ground floor lateral flat within a large Victorian House. The house has a later addition of a brick built extension placed on a side garden which forms an annex to the flat. Its unusual layout demanded a skilled solution.

The proposal was to incorporate an additional level within the annex and make a direct connection to the garden. The remainder of the flat would be re ordered to retain three bedrooms with a main bathroom and en-suite. A mezzanine is formed to scoop light into the lower annex via a new roof light and tall glazed doors. The bespoke joinery includes a double height bookshelf uniting the kitchen and mezzanine study where a long walnut desk floats above the glass balustrading. A children’s bedroom includes a bespoke bed with pull-out drawers in different sizes forming steps to the bed.

The fit out is a combination of appropriate period finishes with contemporary details and the language in the annex and main flat vary but compliment each other. The result is an interesting and well lit dwelling which connects with its refurbished garden.
